Speak, scream, howl, whisper or sing your poems, stories, lyrics and monologues in Australian Poetry Slam 2017
a live literary performance program where the audience is the judge!

Anyone can participate: all you need is your voice.

Writers and performers are given a microphone, a live audience and just two minutes to impress the judges with their original spoken word, poetry, hip hop, monologues and stories.

Slam heats are being held in city and regional venues around Australia from June to October. For more information about the National competition visit

This year’s MC for the Coffs Harbour event will be 2016 Australian Poetry Slam Champion Arielle Cottingham. Arielle is an Afro-Latina poet, performance artist, and dancer. She began performing spoken word in 2014 while studying at the University of Melbourne. Since then she has developed a full-time career as a spoken-word poet including working as creative producer of Melbourne’s Slamalamadingdong.

Arielle's writing probes the territory of the personal as the political, dealing heavily with themes of identity, heritage, history, and the roles they play in immediate, everyday interactions. Her performances incorporate elements of dance and physical theatre to create multidisciplinary pieces that have been described as both elegant and profoundly moving.

If you want to be in the cheering, raucous, finger-snapping, poetry-loving audience, come along to an upcoming slam. You may even get to judge, as judges are chosen from the live audience.

WHERE: Harry Bailey Memorial Library, Coffs Harbour
WHEN: Thursday, 24 August, 6 – 8pm, register to perform from 5:30pm at the venue.
