The potential and limits of technology unite the work of artists JP Wills and Alex Riske. For several decades, both have pushed the boundaries of what digital design mediums make possible. In his new series Utopia, Willis presents idealised images of pastoral beauty and unspoilt landscapes - with an unnerving edge. Though these new works could be mistaken for photographs, don’t be fooled, this is pure painting sharing a common lineage with classical oil painting yet conceived with a pixel palette and rendered with a digitised brush. From intricate hand-drawn, pre-digital works of the 1990s to early digital manipulations of the 2000s, Alex Riske’s intricate geometries tackle concepts of infinity, fractals and the boundlessness of form. Deb Mansfield looks to peripheral spaces as a way of investigating the nature of boundaries and borders. In choosing spaces that are neither here nor there, and by conflating truth and fiction, she uses these sites as stop-overs in her navigation across a contemporary cultural landscape. Includes photography, tapestry, sculptural and installation works.
